Winter College, now in its 5th year as an online learning program, offers a week of virtual events featuring Miami University faculty, staff, and alumni. Each day includes a lunchtime presentation on a variety of engaging topics. The program also celebrates Miami University's Charter Day with highlights of its history and the Love & Honor Awards.

How can accessory dwelling units (ADUs) help alleviate the housing crisis? Join us to discover how ADUs offer a flexible, community-focused solution to the housing crisis and why they’re a vital part of the conversation on sustainable urban development.

Our faculty experts, Jeff Kruth, Assistant Professor of Architecture, and Murali Paranandi, Professor of Architecture will join us to discuss how adding backyard homes, granny flats, and in-law suites can increase housing supply, provide more affordable housing options, and support multigenerational living.  We’ll also discuss the challenges and opportunities of integrating ADUs into existing neighborhoods and their broader social and economic impacts.

Jeff Kruth is an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Director of Graduate Studies. His research and teaching focus on issues of urban design and housing in the American city, and he works closely with community partners, faculty, and students at the Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine. Previously, he worked with the Yale Urban Design Workshop, Kent State's Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, and the Louisiana Universities Resilient Architecture Consortium at Louisiana Tech University.

Murali Paranandi is a Professor of Architecture at Miami University, focusing his research on the application of emerging digital practices in architecture to achieve target value design, affordability, and sustainability. He holds a Master of Architecture from The Ohio State University, another Master of Architecture from Kent State University, and a Professional Bachelor of Architecture from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in India. Professor Paranandi has been recognized for his contributions to architectural education and innovation, having published extensively, led interdisciplinary design-build projects, and mentored students in award-winning competitions. His excellence in teaching has been acknowledged through the receipt of the Crossan Hays Curry Distinguished Educator Award.
